On the 15th July the touch rugby World Cup kicked off in Nottingham with 39 nations having teams across various categories. Lesley and Vicky made the journey south to volunteer and support in the running of the event. Both were part of the opening ceremony where all the sides competing across the week gathered on field 1 at the Highfields ground. The pair donated the teams old tsunami kit to the SOS kit fund which is donated to children to get them playing sport.
In addition to our volunteer hero’s we had our Carl and Rhian, 2 of our superstars playing in the Men’s 35s and Women’s 40s categories.
Wet conditions on the first 2 days, made for perfect diving conditions for all the teams. Check out this class shot taken by Lesley of Rhian scoring against Scotland during the pool stages. The weather also saw many folk rocking the poncho look, but as the week went on the weather improved and the great results continued to come in.
The women’s 40s team made history when they were the first side apart from Australia to beat the New Zealand ladies. Hester Williams who played for us during the In2touch spring league also featured in this side.
Athena, Gareth, Lesley, Matt and Rolf all made the trip to support the teams during their semi final fixtures, which were fantastic games to see. They also caught up with many familiar faces representing in other teams. Including Craig from Alnwick Touch who was part of the Scotland men’s 40s team who used to train with us pre covid days.
England had their best result yet at a World Cup with everyone of their teams with women in them winning a medal in their respective category! This is an incredible achievement and shows how far women in sport have come.
